For ten years, the Almaty Marathon has been justly considered the largest marathon in Central Asia. Running is currently the most affordable sport. For ten years of the Almaty Marathon, amateur running has turned into one of the most popular types of physical activity.

The first Almaty Marathon took place in 2012 and brought together about 2.5 thousand runners. Already in 2013, the marathon joined the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), and its track was certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

From its very first year, the Almaty Marathon spends a portion of the funds raised due to its participants on charitable goals. Every year, the funds are donated for the needs of special institutions where children with special needs, children from low-income families or those left without parental care are raised or educated. As a result, sports facilities were built, as well as sports or medical equipment was purchased for each of these institutions. A total of 22 charitable goals have been implemented for these years thanks to the participants of the Almaty Marathon.

In 2020, the Almaty Marathon was canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic on the eve of the start. In 2021, all infectious safety measures will be observed and maximum control over their observance will be ensured during the competition.
